Emma: Why did the people of Ur decide they needed to protect themselves by building a wall around their city?
Emma asked this great question about the reason for the wall surrounding Ur.
Several students came up with exactly the right explanation: in addition to protecting their lives, the people of Ur wanted to be sure no one stole their incredibly valuable surplus supply of wheat and barley.

Here's an image of another Mesopotamian city, known as Mari.
You can see that Mari also was surrounded by a wall, but its layout was different than Ur's layout.
