Today we talked about the unusual circumstances surrounding King Henry VIII's decision to break away from the Catholic Church and establish a new, Protestant denomination: the Church of England (later known as the Episcopal Church).
King Henry VIII was familiar with the ideas and writings of Martin Luther and William Tyndale, but he was particularly motivated by his desire to obtain a divorce from his wife, Queen Catherine of Aragon.
When the pope refused (on multiple occasions) to grant him a divorce, Henry VIII ultimately took matters into his own hands by establishing a new denomination. Interestingly, the king appointed himself (rather than the pope) as the ultimate decision-maker in this new denomination!
